Encantes Viejos

The Encants Market in Barcelona replaced in 2013 the popular market “Encants Vells” A popular space, where people traded in stalls in the middle of the street. A space that was degraded over time and that the new facility has come to modernize.

This new building, designed by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, has become one of Barcelona’s most emblematic venues. Its large metal roof – golden, shiny – is a large mirror located almost 25 meters high, covering the 8,000 m2 floor plan that houses 80 stores and 150 stalls, including a gastronomic space, parking and services. This commercial space, designed on slightly inclined planes, generates a continuous route that simulates a walk along the street, far from the vertical and closed sensation of a typical shopping mall.

A project with these architectural characteristics is very difficult to identify. On the one hand, the market brand itself, which is complex and very extensive – ENCANTS BARCELONA Fira de Bellcaire – with the challenge that it had to be visualized from different streets and from many meters away in a building without facades and with the roof at 25 meters.

The signaling also had a certain complexity because it was a completely permeable enclosure with an infinite number of accesses. The stalls and stores had to be arranged and numbered in a labyrinthine surface of inclined planes, with no ceilings and few vertical walls. Signes carried out the wayfinding project, as well as the fabrication and installation of all the elements. A difficult project, a project for Signes.
