Encants Market Barcelona

Encantes Viejos

In 2013 the Mercado Encants replaced the popular ‘Encants Vells’ market in Barcelona, a popular space where stalls traded openly in the street, a space that had become run down over time, and which the new facility had come to replace.

This new building, designed by b720 Fermín Vázquez Architects, has become one of Barcelona's most symbolic venues. Its grand, sparkling and golden metallic roof is a large mirror situated almost 25 metres high, covering the 8,000 m² floor plan that houses 80 shops and 150 stalls, including a food market, parking and facilities.

This commercial space has been designed according to a slightly sloping plan, generating a continuous route that simulates a walk in the street, far from the vertical, closed sensation of standard shopping centres.

A project with these architectural features is very difficult to brand. On one hand, the actual brand of the market itself is both complex and long - ENCANTS BARCELONA Fira de Bellcaire – whilst on the other, there is the challenge of making it visible from a distance on a building that has no facades and a 25 metre high ceiling.

The signage also had a certain complexity due to it being a completely open facility with innumerable entrances. The stalls and shops had to be ordered and numbered on a mazy surface of sloping floors, with no ceilings and few vertical walls.

Signes carried out the wayfinding project as well as manufacturing and installing all of the different elements. A difficult project; a project for Signes.
