The Challenge

The Museo Nacional del Prado was looking for a refined and elegant orientation system to guide visitors through its extensive collection of galleries and public spaces. The challenge was to create a clear and accessible signage system without compromising the museum’s aesthetic and historical integrity. The signs had to integrate seamlessly into the neoclassical architecture while providing multilingual information for the museum’s large international audience. In addition, the signage needed to improve accessibility for all visitors, ensuring intuitive and visually coherent guidance and information.

Signes Project

The project is approached as an exercise in balance between orientation and visual discretion, where signage does not compete with the space. User analysis defines a strategy whose result is a global system that facilitates route reading, even from outside the museum, without altering the visitor’s contemplative experience.

The exterior signage is strategically organized based on the analysis of visitor flows and behaviors, facilitating intuitive orientation from the very first access points to the museum.

The exterior signage personalizes each access point through references to the museum’s collection, reinforcing the identity of the destination and the arrival experience.

Inside the museum, the signage corrects routes conditioned by the building’s structure, clearly guiding visitors toward their destination.

Design + Execution

The sophisticated system is defined by precision and discretion. The solution harmonizes with the museum’s architectural heritage through minimalist and elegant typography that complements the classical environment. The materials used were carefully selected according to durability and visual appeal criteria, ensuring the signs could withstand heavy visitor traffic while maintaining their aesthetic quality. Multilingual signage (Spanish and English) enhances the visitor experience by providing clear guidance throughout the museum. The system also incorporates universal design principles, ensuring accessibility for visitors with disabilities. The result is a cohesive and timeless orientation system that reinforces the museum’s role as a world-renowned cultural institution while preserving the dignity of its historic architecture.

The typography, minimalist and elegant, integrates naturally into a sober and classical environment.

The Museo del Prado’s pictograms are unique. The simplicity of the lines of the neoclassical style is present in its design.
