he palm trees of Jean Nouvel

The Renaissance Fira Hotel is managed by the Marriot chain, having been designed by the Atelier Jean Nouvel architects team in collaboration with Ribas & Ribas architects of Barcelona.

The building is formed by two slender towers that are joined internally via their respective terrace and restaurant floors. The project is a large-scale interpretation of the plant kingdom. The white facades are printed with palm tree serigraphs, which are windows from inside the rooms, interspersed with plant graphics made of black glass, combining with the great indoor forest of palm trees and flora to form a spectacular vertical garden that innovatively brings architecture and nature together.

Developing the signage for a hotel designed by such esteemed architects is always a plus for Signes. The ideas are always clear from the start, making our job much easier. It consists of finding the best industrial solutions, testing the most complex pieces using models and prototypes, and suggesting the most discrete materials or the most subtle graphic applications in line with the project’s architectural requirements.

A small conflict arose between the building’s owner and the architect: the facade had to incorporate lighting, which the client wanted to be white but the architect wanted to be green. Signes proposed a manufacturing solution that satisfied both parties, meaning that by day it was white and by night it would be green. The lighting was an important theme. Green LED strip lights were installed at specific locations in order to give accentuate the project’s plant life motif.

In short, the implementation of subtle and minimalistic signage that would make the hotel recognisable and well signposted without encroaching on its interior design.
