Baku Formula 1 Circuit, a high speed challenge

In 2016 Azerbaijan hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix. Over the course of a weekend the cars would be the kings of the road in an urban layout around Baku’s historical centre.

With such worldwide promotion, and with thousands of foreign visitors in the country's capital, the Azerbaijani government decided to call on Signes in order to carry out the Wayfinding project. After the positive experience of Baku’s first European Olympic Games, in which Signes also collaborated, we had the full confidence of the organisers.

The challenge was huge: we had little time in which to develop the project and its scope extended over kilometres through the most iconic areas of the capital.

It was of vital importance to manage large flows and circulations of spectators, and to guide the audience to the stands, services and viewing areas set up for the trophy ceremony. In turn, we had to alleviate the impact on the daily life of the neighbours whose houses were surrounded by the circuit.

At the design level, the determining factors were not simple: the signs had to be of a large enough format to be easily read in large outdoor spaces whilst being resistant to harsh weather (Baku is known as the windy city), they had to be mounted and dismantled in a week, to be later stored until the following year.

Given all these conditions we travelled immediately to Baku, and after several visits and a clear line of communication, we succeeded in reaching the finish line just in time.

The first Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit was a roaring success. We are proud to have been a part of it.
