Bernabéu: Wayfinding for a New Generation of Sports and Entertainment Venues
Opened in 1947 as the home of Real Madrid CF, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has evolved into a multifunctional venue operating 365 days a year. With a capacity of more than 83,000 spectators and millions of visitors annually, the new Bernabéu hosts sporting events, concerts, immersive experiences, tourist activities and major corporate events.
This extraordinary transformation presented a major wayfinding challenge within a large-scale environment featuring multiple levels, access points and routes. Adding to this complexity is the coexistence of different user groups, each with different needs and journeys within the same space.

The wayfinding strategy began with an analysis of flows, access points and key decision points to establish a visual hierarchy based on physical signage, innovative solutions such as illuminated signage that can be hidden when not required, and colour coding adapted to different users and routes.
The result is an inclusive and scalable wayfinding system, integrated with the architecture and the venue’s new identity. Its design facilitates arrival, orientation and decision-making within one of the world’s most visited sports and entertainment venues.
