Facing the sea in Barcelona, Hospital del Mar has undergone significant changes since its opening as the Municipal Infectious Diseases Hospital. Today, it is one of the city’s leading healthcare centres.
In constant evolution, the expansion of its facilities represents a challenge in terms of orientation. In this project, where new and existing buildings coexist, it was essential to create a system that preserves the existing signage while introducing a new strategy aimed at achieving simple and effective orientation.
To this end, we developed a wayfinding strategy that structures navigation within the hospital in a logical and hierarchical way, through the implementation of a coded system that facilitates orientation and adapts to the needs of all types of users.
In the new Building C of Hospital del Mar, the signage is consistent with the architecture and becomes a functional resource. The high contrast of the elements ensures visibility, while the clean lines of the pictograms and typography maintain a visual language in harmony with the overall environment.
Within the hospital complex, each building has its own colour identity. In the case of Building C, blue acts as a reference within a palette that provides continuity across the entire system.
