A jewel of Catalan Modernism

Hotel España, built in 1859 located in the historic center of Barcelona, is a gem of Catalan Modernism.

The architect Luís Domènech i Montaner reformed it in the year 1900 applying the latest advances of the times, he installed of the first elevators of Barcelona with a telephone line and electricity. Renowned contemporary artists collaborated in the moment with the painter Ramon Casas who was commissioned to sketch maritime motifs in the dining room and the sculptor Eusebi Arnau, author of the magnifique 5-meter high alabaster chimney representing the ages of man.

In 2010, the Montaner spirit was retaken, since the passing of the time had worn down the building. Today, it is a gem of Modernism which breathes the history of Barcelona in all its corners has the best and most modern installations.

Chef Martín Berasategui is at the head of Fonda España restaurant.

Interior Designer, Merçè Borrell, responsible for the project commissioned the signage needs assessment to Signes.

As in all protected historic buildings, signage must meet its goal without complications passing by as unnoticed as possible.

In order to identify the main entrance we left out the supports and bases of the labels and we chose individual letters, fabricated on cast aluminum, painted and integrated in the architecture.

Completing the outdoors, with the vinyl markings and in the elegant el crystal exterior the hotel and restaurant enjoys.

With the same aluminum lined and painted material, the level numbers were identified, directions to locate rooms, whereabouts and pictograms. The project was completed with the emergency signage and normalized Signes evacuation, which covers the existing normativity.
