Signage is a public service

The Railway Infrastructure’s Administrator is a public entity that belongs to the Ministry of Development. It is the public company that manages the railway network and their stations in the national territory.

Adif hired SUMMA, branding specialists for the design and development of its new corporate identity, which should be implemented in all access to stations, on the facades of buildings, interior lobbies, shops, services and platforms. SUMMA incorporated Signes into its work team to carry out the study of signage needs of the stations and industrial design.

The challenge was important, since the family of elements to be developed for a project of this scale is infinite and the multiple signage needs of these infrastructures for a national scope is immense.

We organized some visits to analyze the project and confirm the uses, directions and destinations of the users. Different types of stations were selected:

· Small, medium and large

· Urban and rural

· With car park at the same building, with an outdoor one or directly without car park.

With this different train stations, an exterior family, and two more, for interior and emergency and evacuation signage elements were designed to cover 100% the identification and signage needs of Adif’s buildings and stations.

 

The next phase -once the industrial design was completed-consisted of visiting every station to determine the signaling needs of each one. With this information, Adif commissioned the manufacture and assembly of several companies, because of the magnitude of the project, counting with Signes for the first prototype stations and for the most emblematic applications.
